These are people who had returned from the UK.
The identification of the new coronavirus strain VOC 202012/01 in Cyprus, according to an announcement by the Ministry of Health of Cyprus and after the completion of the control of samples from individuals from the United Kingdom for the existence of the new strain of the virus, it was known that:
“Following the instructions of the European Center for Infection Prevention and Control (ECDC) on the new strain of SARS-CoV-2 virus, VOC 202012/01, which was detected first in the UK and then in several European countries , the Ministry Health Institute, through the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics, carried out a specialized screening of samples from people who arrived from the UK and were positively diagnosed with the virus.
In particular, all positive samples of arrivals from the United Kingdom were sent to ING from the day the British authorities announced the existence of the new executive in their country, that is, on December 20, 2020, and up to 15 days before. More specifically, of the 19 samples from the 6-20 December 2020 period that were examined, 12 of them identified the VOC 202012/01 strain.
The new virus strain is seen to have been associated with a higher viral load, faster spread, and higher transmissibility of up to 70%. The new strain of the virus is believed to have contributed to some extent to the increase in cases in Europe and consequently to the increase in hospitalizations.
It is recalled that the ECDC recommendations focus, among other things, on strict compliance with personal protection measures and intensification of epidemiological and molecular control through laboratory tests ”.
