Mike and Carol Bruno, a Chicago couple, did everything they could to avoid the coronavirus. However, one visit proved fatal.
They avoided overcrowding and large family dinners, as usual. Instead, they limited themselves to making phone calls and video calls, even with close family members, though they did not stay away.
But a simple family visit sometimes a haircut it cost both their lives.
The Brunos have been married for almost six decades. They lived in Chicago and died ten days apart. They are two of the more than 337,000 victims of the coronavirus in the United States.
His son, Joseph Bruno, spoke to CNNi. He hopes the family grief will serve as an important reminder of how easy it is to become infected with the coronavirus, no matter how safe you feel.
“Even when you think you’re doing everything right, he can find you,” she says.
Safety measures
In late November, Carol Bruno went to her son’s apartment with her sister to get a haircut. Before the visit, his sister, who works in a hairdresser, was tested for coronavirus and it came back negative. He was also in solitary confinement for 3-4 days, which made the family feel safe.
During the visit, which lasted about 40 minutes, the relatives wore a mask and avoided hugs, the son says. Also, they made sure their mother was sitting by the open windows, as an additional precaution.
The next day, Bruno’s sister started showing symptoms of Covid-19. Soon after, mother and son also began to feel bad.
On Thanksgiving, Carol Bruno, the mother, was admitted to the hospital. A few days later she was discharged, as her condition seemed to have improved. Two days later, he returned to the hospital and was intubated.
Then her husband got sick.
Mike Bruno had not accompanied his wife and daughter on that visit, but began showing symptoms that forced him to be admitted to the hospital about two weeks after his wife.
One day after her husband was intubated, Carol died. Nine days later, on December 23, Mike followed him.
