Eleven Republican senators announced today that they will oppose the ratification by the United States Congress of next week’s presidential elections, a last-ditch effort that could delay the confirmation of Joe Biden’s victory, but prevent it.
To date, only one senator, Josh Holey, has announced his intention to challenge the Democratic victory next Wednesday.
“Congress must immediately appoint an electoral commission, with full authority to investigate the possibility of ‘electoral fraud,'” the 11 senators said in a statement, echoing the baseless accusations made by Donald Trump two months ago.
The committee should “conduct a 10-day emergency review of the state’s results,” where the result was ambiguous between the two candidates, say the senators, led by Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. If this check is not done, “on January 6 we will vote to reject the voters of the states in dispute,” they added.
The House of Representatives and the Senate are expected to meet Wednesday to validate the results of the Voters’ vote, a process generally considered formal.
However, the outgoing president continues to refuse to acknowledge his defeat and asked his supporters to gather in Washington that day.
In the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives, more than 100 Republican MPs are expected to vote against ratifying the election result, CNN reports.
However, in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, the votes are not enough to make your case a success.
