Coronavirus: 597 new cases -43 deaths, 429 intubated

Scientists affirm in every tone that even today the epidemiological panorama of our country is not one that allows us to discuss the lifting of restrictive measures. The good news is the new drop in the positivity index, which fell to 2.08 on New Year’s Eve, but that doesn’t mean there should be complacency.

The general precaution is due to the large number of cases in Attica (210), but also to the tendency to stabilize the viral load of SARS-CoV-2 in the wastewater of the urban complex of Thessaloniki.

“The virus is circulating among us”, said the EKPA professor and member of the Expert Committee in the last update of 2020 Vana Papaevangelou, referring to the approximately 8,500 active cases in the country, with more than 2,000 in Attica and more than 1,600 in Thessaloniki.

At the same time, the expert committee for the coronavirus pandemic faces with particular concern 11 regions of Greece, which remain in the “red.” According to the Deputy Minister of Civil Protection, Nikos Hardalias, in addition to West Attica and Kozani, areas that remain in a strict lockdown, several regions, municipalities and areas appear to show worrying signs of “resistance” to the coronavirus. Mr. Hardalias called on the residents of these areas to be extremely careful and to remain consistent in enforcing the measures.

The 11 areas are:

  1. Florina peripheral unit
  2. Keratsini-Drapetsona Municipality
  3. Municipality of Peristeri
  4. Municipality of Ilio and Acharnes
  5. Zefyrio area of Fili Municipality
  6. Kalymnos
  7. Municipality of Aspropyrgos
  8. Municipality of Elefsina
  9. Kozani
  10. Municipality of Eordea
  11. Municipality of Voio

Gogos: “If there is an outbreak of cases in Attica, we will have great difficulties”

“In Attica we see stabilization and not improvement of things. If there is an outbreak of cases in Attica, we will have great difficulties. This is an area that we are looking at and our attention is strained. The numbers in Athens stay in the triple digits and are one of the main areas we will look at for decision making, ”Mr. Gogos characteristically emphasized on SKAI TV.

It is recalled that only yesterday, Friday, 1/3 of the coronavirus cases announced by EODY were detected in Attica. Specifically, of the 597 new cases, 210 were found in the basin.

Monday raffles for schools

However, decisions are expected on the sectors of society that can be opened in the first days of 2021. It is expected that the start will be made with schools, since on January 4 the infectious diseases committee will meet again. Given that in the previous days, due to the holidays, despite the confinement, there was intense mobility, infectious disease specialists await their mark on the epidemiological data. Thus, the final decision was postponed to Monday, in order to have the latest epidemiological data in their hands.

When asked if there is a chance that schools will open on January 8 or 11, Gogos stressed that if the country’s improved epidemiological landscape continues, perhaps with a further reduction, then the discussion about return can begin. The students, however, emphasize that the opening of schools will be horizontal for all areas, when areas such as Kozani and West Attica, which have a large epidemiological burden, must be taken into account.

On Monday we will have data on the celebration of Christmas. “It will have been 10 days since then, so we will know how our behaviors and mobility in those days reflect the epidemiological curve that exists and there will also be data from hospitals,” said Charalambos Gogos.
