Concern is growing in Britain over the spread of the coronavirus, as the country has been recording more than 50,000 new cases for four consecutive days, and the government is taking steps to take further emergency measures.
The country today registered 53,285 new cases of Covid-19 and 613 deaths, according to official figures.
Yesterday, the British authorities announced 55,892 cases and 964 deaths from the new coronavirus.
Given these events, the country’s health officials decided to reactivate the emergency hospitals that had been built at the beginning of the pandemic to face the pressure on the National Health System.
Health officials have warned that they are having a difficult time coping, especially as many of their colleagues are ill and must be quarantined.
Nurses are now forced to tend to patients in ambulances because there are not many beds available.
At the same time, the British government decided to close all London primary schools for the next two weeks to cope with the rapid spread of the most contagious virus.
On Wednesday, Education Secretary Gavin Williamson outlined a plan to delay the opening of high schools.
Only in the worst affected areas of the country, which included some districts of the capital, were schools expected to remain closed.
However, local authorities in the areas where the schools were to reopen protested.
“The government finally came to its senses and took a 180 degree turn,” wrote London Mayor Sadiq Khan on Twitter. “All elementary schools in London will be treated the same. It is the right decision …”.
