Coronavirus: The British government has decided to close all primary schools in London for the next two weeks to cope with the rapid spread of the most contagious strain of the Covid-19 virus, the mayor of the capital announced.
On Wednesday, Education Secretary Gavin Williamson outlined a plan to delay the opening of high schools, but most elementary schools for children under the age of 11 will open next week, as soon as the Christmas break is over.
Only in the worst affected areas of the country, which included some districts of the capital, were schools expected to remain closed. However, local authorities in the areas where the schools were to reopen protested.
“The government finally came to its senses and took a 180 degree turn,” wrote London Mayor Sadiq Khan on Twitter.
“All elementary schools in London will be treated the same. It is the right decision …”.
