Volcano erupts in San Vicente - Residents flee their homes

Inhabitants of the largest island in the St. Vincent and the Grenadines archipelago were instructed to leave their homes today after a volcano, dormant for decades, began spewing ash.

The government issued an “orange alert” for the La Souffrier volcano, which means it could erupt in the next 24 hours. He advised residents living in the surrounding areas to leave their homes immediately.

The gas, smoke and ash come from the top of the volcano, which is located on the north side of the island of Saint Vincent, the Caribbean Disaster Management Service said.

No more volcanic activity has been observed in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, with a population of just over 100,000, since 1979. In 1902, when La Soufrier erupted again, more than 1,000 people died.

Authorities in Martinique, France’s overseas territory, are also closely monitoring the activity of the Pelé volcano, as tremors of concern were recorded in the last month. Mount Pelé shows an increase in seismic activity since April 2019, for the first time since its activation in the period 1929-32. Authorities warn that a new volcanic eruption could be very dangerous.

However, the scientists point out that the simultaneous activations of the La Soufrier and Pelé volcanoes are not related to each other.
