“My fellow citizens,
Before long, we left behind a year full of unprecedented difficulties. In its beginnings, the country had overcome economic and social stagnation and moved forward together.
But then the pandemic that still plagues the entire planet broke out, while our country was called upon to manage many fronts and at the same time: The explosion of migratory waves. The effects of the coronavirus on health and the economy. And, of course, the confusion in the field of our national problems.
In the face of all this, Greece stood up. At Evros, he secured his borders. In the Aegean, it protected and relieved its islands. In the eastern Mediterranean, it safeguarded their rights.
And, at the same time, it protected everyone’s life and income. Boldly, but also without lowering the principles of democracy and the rules of parliamentarism. At the turn of the year, then, we have the resources to transform the 2020 experience into a force for 2021.
This year we celebrate in another way: at home, with our family, closing the door to the virus. Because cases are receding, but dangers lurk. And despite many months of fatigue, it would be unfair for a few moments of relaxation to tear down what we have sacrificially built to date.
At the end of the day, the passport to a better life is already here: The vaccine is our shield and the health witness that receives the new year from the old man who is leaving.

The Covid vaccine is the New Year’s gift of 2021. And our antidote will be its universal acceptance. Because it means self-protection but also solidarity with our loved ones.
Everyone’s caution does not allow reservations from anyone. The freedom of denial cannot become a denial of freedom. And as the vaccine progresses, so will the coronavirus.
I was vaccinated quickly, easily and safely. In fact, seeing in person the capacity of our doctors and nurses, I urge you to trust them with greater fervor, facilitating their work until the end of this great ordeal.
Because the vigilance against a new resurgence of the pandemic remains. And the mask, like all protective measures, will continue to accompany us until the vaccination process is completed.
But now we are at the end of the adventure. And that should arm us with new forces. The state will continue to care for society and support the economy. And the new year will definitely be a year of freedom.
This, after all, is the title of the national expedition that is evolving for our final Covid-19 release. But also the essence of the celebration of the two centuries of our independence.
In 2021, then, it will be dense, closing old wounds and opening new horizons. Complete 200 years of national course. Complete 40 years of European experience. And it marks the beginning of a new decade of prosperity.
Just as the Greeks once encountered the great currents of nation-states, democracy and the rule of law, we must now listen to the message of our time: Development for all with dynamism, extroversion and respect for the environment.
We now know well the power of our unity: without it we would not have been successful, not in the pandemic and the economy, or in our defense. Now, this unit is becoming the common path to great goals.
We also know that the crisis can become an opportunity: the new SEN, the digital state, the powerful Armed Forces declare it. None of this was self-evident. And yet now it is yesterday’s experiences that ignite the future of the country.
