The epidemiological situation in the country is of great concern to experts and the government.
The increase in new cases is a “bell” for the new year, as the concern centers on the resilience of the health system, which continues to receive suffocating pressure.
Yesterday’s 1,047 cases came after nine consecutive days with a triple-digit number of new infections.
“The virus is circulating among us,” said EKPA professor and member of the Expert Committee Vana Papaevangelou, referring to the approximately 8,500 active cases in the country, with more than 2,000 in Attica and more than 1,600 in Thessaloniki, as well as the increase in the epidemiological index in the West. Attica (53 cases), Evros (37), Kilkis (34), Kozani (52) and Pieria (13).
Eight other areas are at the center of epidemiological surveillance and analysis, and officials are ready to take additional restrictive measures in the coming days. These are the following: Florina, Keratsini, Drapetsona, Peristeri, Ilion, Zefyri, Acharnes, Kalymnos.
In the context of northern Greece with an epidemiological burden, Ms Papaevangelou clarified that, in view of two months of winter weather, “we must not get carried away by joy and optimism” and that, if the recommendations of the experts, will be met again. hospitals and ICU.
The painful experience of the pandemic, as he characterized it, has not yet come to an end with the vaccine, which is a beginning, since “herd immunity will not be achieved until several months have passed, so we do not change our behavior until 70% of it is vaccinated population “.
At the same time, the persistence of the epidemic is reflected in the reproduction rates of the disease, Rt, which in Attica is 0.8 and in Thessaloniki 0.6.
This means that 100 people positive for the coronavirus can transmit the virus to another 80 in the basin and another 60 in Thessaloniki.
11 areas are in trouble
According to Deputy Minister of Civil Protection Nikos Hardalia, in addition to West Attica and Kozani, areas that remain in strict lockdown, several regions, municipalities and areas appear to show worrying signs of “resistance” to the coronavirus.
Mr. Hardalias called on the residents of these areas to be extremely careful and to remain consistent in complying with the measures.
The 11 areas are:
- Florina peripheral unit
- Keratsini-Drapetsona Municipality
