A child was killed in an earthquake in central Croatia, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic said.
“We were informed that a girl was killed … we have no information about other victims,” he told local media during a visit to the disaster site.
At the same time, many people were injured after the strong 6.4 magnitude earthquake according to emergency services. The images show people being pulled out of the rubble near the epicenter.
The German Center for Research in Geosciences (GFZ) announced that the earthquake’s focal depth was 10 km.
The N1 news network reported that the epicenter of the earthquake was in the city of Petrinia, 50 kilometers from the capital, Zagreb.
In addition, it transmitted images showing rescuers pulling a man and a boy alive from the rubble of a building, according to APE-MPE.
Other shots show a house whose roof has collapsed. The journalist said she did not know if someone was inside the house.
Tomislav Fabianic, head of the emergency medical service in Sisak, near Petrinia, said there were many injuries in Petrinia and Sisak.
“There are fractures, concussions and some necessary surgery,” he said.
The army is involved in rescue efforts, while the electricity supply has been cut off in the city center.
Slovenian news agency STA reported that the only nuclear power plant in Kersko, located 100 km from the epicenter, was closed for precautionary reasons.
No other information is available for losses.
The earthquake hit the capital, Zagreb, and many residents took to the streets, some with tiles and other rubble. It was also felt in neighboring Bosnia and Serbia.
A 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck central Croatia on Monday, again near Petrinia, causing only minor damage. A 5.3 magnitude earthquake struck Zagreb in March, killing at least one person and injuring 27 others.
