School Opening: Kerameans Teleconference with a Committee of Experts – The Evening Announcements

[ad_1]

Data on when schools will open after the Christmas holidays will be discussed at today’s remote meeting of the Committee of Specialists and the Minister of Education, Niki Kerameos.

The teleconference will begin later in the afternoon and announcements are expected in the afternoon.

The objective of the Ministry of Education is – if epidemiological data allow it – to open school units after January 7, when the restrictive measures that are in force formally expire.

The committee of experts will discuss with the Minister of Education all available data on the evolution of the pandemic and will jointly prepare the roadmap for the opening of schools.

So far it has not been clarified whether in the first phase only elementary schools or colleges and lyceums will be opened, while it remains to be seen when the experts will arrive.

Messages about the unlocking of elementary, middle and high schools by infectious disease specialists and government officials show that we are close to resuming students.

“Elementary schools are much safer. The committee will discuss when they will open today,” said EKPA Professor of Pathological Physiology of Infections Nikos Sypsas.

Both Mr. Sypsas and other members of the Committee state that with current data, schools can be opened safely. However, as the professor said, what scares him is an epidemic outbreak.

At a glance at cases and ICU

In any case, today’s teleconference between Kerameans and the Committee is particularly crucial and will decide the date of resumption of the students’ schooling.

Infectious disease specialists monitor epidemiological data, the number of cases, the percentage of positivity, as well as the number of patients and intubated every day, since in everyone’s mind there is the possibility of a new outbreak of cases due to the season festive.

Critical dates

According to the data so far, the government, if it receives the green light from the experts, will open the schools on January 8 or 11.

However, there are some infectious disease specialists who believe that the return of the students should occur a week later.

The basic scenario that is on the table right now is to open all educational levels on January 11.

“Our priority is to open schools. We will wait for the experts to tell us,” Stelios Petsas said yesterday without revealing whether all schools will be opened together or only elementary schools.

As the days pass and we approach the end of 2020, the experts present their personal opinion on the subject based on the epidemiological data so far.
