As the coronavirus front in the territory appears to weaken and the virus recedes, the battle with the deadly virus continues in the Intensive Care field. The 476 new cases announced today by National Public Health Organization (EODY) they are an indication of the “weakening” of the epidemic in the population compared to the double number of cases reported in the week before Christmas. However, 467 people with complications from covid-19 infection are admitted to the ICU with mechanical support in their respiratory function and receive treatment, care and human contact from health professionals.
The pace of de-escalation of the “battle” within the ICU is very slow. In the last 24 hours, 5 patients were discharged from the ICU for the simple covid-19 clinics, where hospitalization continues for another 7 to 10 days.
The “battle” will continue to be fierce for the hundreds of intubated patients in the coming weeks. This epidemiological index, of intubated, turns out to be the “hardest”, since it does not bend easily.
The prognosis for a reduction of intubated to 300
It is indicative that on December 11, based on the course of the epidemic and forecasts based on epidemiological models, the experts had … dared a first assessment, it turned out to be very optimistic to go out and be true. The scientists of the Committee of Experts had reported in the standard information that by Christmas the intubated, which at that time was around 500, would have been reduced to 300. Now experts estimate that the intubated will fall to 300 after January 15.
Regarding the course of the epidemic, the outlook remains fragile, as new cases are decreasing, with those responsible pointing out that this result does not correspond to the network of restrictive measures that have been implemented in the country since November 7 . This is a disproportionate result in relation to the measures that have been imposed. The question “if with a closure of so many weeks almost 500 cases are now registered, then what will happen if some measures are taken and some activities are opened?” It worries the scientific and health authorities, whose response is not easy to obtain.
The 476 cases of the last 24 hours were confirmed in a total of 7,339 molecular tests and rapid test. Given that an average of four times as many inspections are carried out on most days, the result announced today by EODY is not considered very representative. The real picture of the cases will probably be formed with tomorrow’s results that will be announced by EODY.
In Attica and Thessaloniki, half of the new cases
Attica and Thessaloniki account for more than half of daily cases, with 188 confirmed cases in the basin and 91 Thessaloniki. Specifically, 19 new infections were reported in Attica in East Attica, 17 in North Athens, 10 in West Attica. 36 in the western sector of Athens, 60 in the central sector of Athens, 20 in the southern sector of Athens and 28 in Piraeus and the Argosaronikos islands.
However, in addition to the daily registry of cases, the impact of the epidemic as recorded in the registry of cases per 100,000 inhabitants in each region, forms a different result for the total viral load that circulates in it.
For example, according to the EODY report, the western sector of Athens has 7.3 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by western Attica with 6.2 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The center of Athens has a large epidemiological burden with 5.8 cases of coronavirus per 100,000 inhabitants and Piraeus (5.7 cases).
Kalymnos and Thassos are a problem
In the current epidemiological map, a high number of population-based cases shows for the first time two islands, Kalymnos (27.1 cases) and Thassos (22.4 cases). The problem that arises with the island areas and the spread of the coronavirus is the difficulty in treating cases, since when treatment is needed, air transport must be carried out to a larger hospital. Health professionals in island structures must have enhanced reflexes and communicate with colleagues in interconnected referral hospitals to coordinate delivery.
Of the regions of the continent, a large number of cases are registered according to their population as follows: Evros (10.3 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), Xanthi (12.5 cases), Florina (7.8 cases), Imathia (6.4 cases). cases), Magnesia (6.3 cases per 100,000 inhabitants).
