About 200 British tourists, who were quarantined in the winter center of Verbier, Switzerland, escaped overnight.

Following the discovery of the new strain of coronavirus in Great Britain, the Swiss authorities announced on December 21 that those who arrived from that country, as of December 14, must be quarantined for ten days.

This was also the case for the hundreds of British tourists who had planned to holiday in Verbier, which the locals call “Little London”, as the British make up 20% of visitors each winter season.

Swiss authorities have managed to locate 420 visitors from Great Britain, who were informed that they should be quarantined. But at least half of them left the area, according to the Swiss daily SonntagsZeitung.

“Many of them were quarantined for a day before leaving overnight,” said Jean-Marc Sandoz, a spokesman for local authorities.

Many hoteliers noticed that their British customers had left only when they realized that they were not answering the phone in their room or when they saw that the food they had left outside the room was intact.

Since flights from Switzerland to Britain were suspended on December 20 (resumed on Thursday), it was initially unclear where tourists went. Some of them later contacted the hotels to find out if they had to pay for the nights they originally booked.

According to a survey conducted at hotels in the area on Saturday, fewer than 10 people remain in quarantine. The rest are gone or the ten day period for your case has expired.

“We can’t blame them. In most cases, the quarantine was unsustainable.” Imagine four people in a 20-square-meter hotel room, “Sandoz said.

Also, according to the publication of the Swiss newspaper, after the news about the new strain of coronavirus, there was “xenophobia” towards British tourists in the luxurious resort. “Anyone who speaks English is a suspect,” the report said.
