The reaction of General Khalifa Haftar, who controls the eastern Libyan military forces, was sparked by the decision of the Turkish National Assembly to extend the Turkish military presence in the country for another 18 months.

At the same time, the Libyan National Army (LNA) said in a statement that thousands of mercenaries armed with Turkish weapons were gathering on the outskirts of Sirte to occupy the city.
LNA spokesman Ahmed Mismari said that military mobility was concentrated in al-Hisa, al-Kadahiya, Zamzam and east of Misrata. He claimed that an attack was being prepared against Sirte, Tzoufra and all the eastern areas controlled by the Libyan National Army. “This situation is a violation of the terms of the ceasefire signed by the Military Commission.”
In support of his claims, Mismari also presented a video of the movements of the Turkish-backed mercenary forces.
The ceasefire signed by the warring parties in Libya provides, among other things, for the withdrawal of all foreign forces and mercenaries from the country within 90 days to hold elections in December 2021.
According to London-based Arab Weekly, the information provided by the LNA coincides with the decision of the Turkish National Assembly last Tuesday to extend the mission of the Turkish forces in Libya for another 18 months. According to the newspaper, all these events cast doubt on Turkey’s intentions to resolve the crisis in Libya.
Speaking to the same newspaper, Libyan MP Zeydan al-Zadma said the decision served Turkey’s suspected targets in Libya. In this way, argues Al Zadma, Turkey seeks to protect its political, economic and oil interests and continue to seize Libya’s resources.
