The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Boris Johnson, announced the departure of his country from the European Erasmus student exchange program, within the framework of the agreement reached today Thursday (12/24) with the European Union.
According to the Athens and Macedonia News Agency, Johnson cited the “cost” of the program, which will be replaced, as he put it, by an “international” British.
It was a “difficult” decision, added the British prime minister, adding that while it was “wonderful” for his country to host so many European students, Erasmus was “too expensive” for the UK.
The British government will replace Erasmus with the national Alan Turing program (named after the famous British mathematician), which will help British students study at “the best universities” in the world and not just in Europe.
European negotiator Michel Barnier lamented Britain’s withdrawal from Erasmus, in which he had been involved since 1987.
After Brexit, for European students wanting to study in Britain (currently estimated at around 150,000) it is estimated that tuition will become more expensive and tuition will become more complicated.
