Patras University Pathology Professor Charalambos Gogos spoke to SKAI and the HOY program about vaccine safety, noting that “the probability of contracting something serious from vaccines is as high as a plane crashing and dying On a flight”. “For the coronavirus vaccine, the only categories that we do not have studies capable of recommending vaccination are children and pregnant women. Beyond that, the following issues arise: Immunosuppressed people who have low immune systems are the ones who need to be vaccinated, however, there is not much data on the ability of the vaccine to give them strong immunity, but it will have some immunity. However, there is no evidence that they should not be vaccinated, ”said Mr. Gogos.
Regarding allergies, he stressed that there is a directive that those who have had severe allergic reactions, who have been hospitalized or who have had to inject cortisone and adrenaline to overcome them should not be vaccinated.
Regarding the goal set by the state for vaccination that reaches 60% -70% of the population. The professor of Pathology pointed out that it is possible, however it requires a lot of effort. “At the moment, from what I have learned both at the polls and in hospitals, a percentage below 50% are willing to be vaccinated. With the right information, this percentage of the population and of course the health sector, I think it will increase. “Hopefully we get to 60% which is the base to start with and I hope we get to 70%, because this is probably the necessary number,” he said.
As for health skepticism about the vaccine, he said he was not surprised, as something similar had been happening for so many years with the flu vaccine. “The compliance and participation of health workers was not what was expected, it was even below 20%. However, over the years participation increased after the safety and need for vaccination was established. Therefore, this percentage, which ranges between 40% -60% per hospital, is a satisfactory percentage for the phase in which we find ourselves ”, he pointed out.
However, he clarified that all health workers must be vaccinated. “There is no possibility that we can continue to deal with the pandemic in large and small hospitals and in health centers, if we are not vaccinated. We must protect ourselves, but we must also protect our patients. “It is our duty to be vaccinated,” he said.
Finally, Mr. Gogos stressed that there is a great need to open schools and in this context “we will examine the data to see if it can be done from January 7 to 8”.
