The World Health Organization (WHO) said it was in “constant contact” with British officials about the emergence of a new strain of the coronavirus.
This strain spreads faster than the original form of the virus, although it is not considered more deadly.
The same mutation has also been identified in Denmark and Australia, the WHO told the BBC.
However, there is no evidence that the new strain reacts differently to vaccines.
In the UK, much of south-east England, including London, is now under a new and stricter level of restriction in an effort to curb the rapid spread of the virus.
The Dutch government suspended all passenger flights from the UK until January 1 following the detection in the Netherlands of an outbreak of a new coronavirus mutation in the UK.
The Dutch Ministry of Health “recommends that any import of this mutation from the UK be restricted as much as possible by restricting and / or controlling the movement of passengers from the UK.”
Germany is “seriously” considering suspending flights from the UK and South Africa following the discovery of a Covid-19 mutation in those countries, a government source told AFP today.
“Britain and South Africa’s air traffic restrictions are a serious option,” said a source close to the German Health Ministry, which is currently considering Berlin.
Belgium will suspend flights and train services from Great Britain starting at midnight Sunday (0100 GMT) following the discovery of a new mutation in the coronavirus, which circulates in parts of Britain, an official from the government.
For his part, Prime Minister Alexander de Croes told VRT that the suspension would last at least 24 hours.
