The president of France joins the leaders who were infected with the new coronavirus, since this morning the Elysee announced that it was positive.
According to the French presidency, Emanuel Macron underwent a test, after showing the first symptoms, he will be in quarantine for seven days and will continue to work remotely.
Large increase in cases
The president’s diagnosis comes amid a resurgence of pandemics in the country, with cases rising to 17,615 from 11,532 in the past 24 hours Tuesday.
This is the largest increase in infections since November 21, according to the Health Ministry, which also announced that another 289 people had died from Covid-19 in one day.
The shocking new figures come just days after the easing of the measures in early December, which Macron was quick to announce.
However, due to the outbreak, the nationwide quarantine was replaced by a nighttime traffic ban starting at 8pm for all holidays, with the sole exception of Christmas Eve.
Castex for vaccine
Yesterday, Prime Minister Jean Castex presented the government’s strategy for vaccination to parliament, saying that by the end of the year France will receive around 1.16 million doses and another 667,000 doses around January 5-6. Around 1.5 million doses will be received in February.
In all, France has ordered around 200 million doses, enough to vaccinate 100 million people. This means that 1.7 million people will be able to get vaccinated in the first months, starting with vulnerable groups, the elderly and nursing staff.
