Those who climb the four-story stairs in less than a minute enjoy good heart health, according to Spanish scientists. But if they last more than a minute and a half, it’s best to see a cardiologist.

That simple “Ladder test” on cardiovascular health presented by researchers, led by cardiologist Jes Πεs Peteiro from Hospital Universitario A de Coruña, in an online conference of the European Society of Cardiology.

“Stairs are an easy way to monitor your heart health. If you need more than a minute and a half to climb four floors, your health is not the best and it would be a good idea to see a doctor.”said Dr. Peteiro, broadcast on APE-MPE.

The method was tested in 165 people with suspected symptoms of coronary heart disease (chest pain, shortness of breath during exercise, etc.). The participants first took a fatigue test and then, after a short rest, were asked to climb 60 steps at a rapid pace without stopping for time.

Those who climbed the stairs to 40 to 45 seconds had the best cardiometabolic function and the lowest mortality in a decade (up to 1% per year or 10% in a decade). Those who did more than a minute and a half had a death rate of 2% to 4% per year or 30% for a decade. Of the latter, nearly six in ten (58%) had some heart failure on the fatigue test, compared to 32% among those who climbed the stairs in less than a minute.
