With an apology from Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to SYRIZA MP Nikos Filis after an intense confrontation between the two during the Prime Minister’s speech, the episode between the two men ended.
The controversy erupted when the prime minister, standing on the floor of Parliament, heard the former Minister of Education protest loudly and asked him to put the mask back on because he belongs to a “vulnerable group.”
Mr. Filis was protesting when Mr. Mitsotakis called North Macedonia “our neighbor to the north.”
At the end of the meeting, the Prime Minister invited Mr. Phillies to his office in Parliament.
Mr. Phillies issued a statement stating:
The Prime Minister’s ironic statement from the plenary of Parliament that I belong to a “vulnerable group and I am in danger” was regrettable. He exuded a public ethos that does not offend me personally but, above all, thousands of our fellow citizens who at some point in their lives had the misfortune to face a serious health problem. I also explained it to the Prime Minister himself, when at the end of the meeting he felt the need to give me personal explanations ”.
