The epidemiological burden of coronavirus in the country is slowly but steadily declining, with the lowest number of new cases recorded today since October 20, when 667 infections were detected across the country.
Specifically, according to the EODY announcement, the number of new coronavirus diagnoses in the last 24 hours amounts to 693. However, the pressure on the country’s Health System remains, with 552 intubated patients, although the number of patients in ICU it decreased by 25, compared to yesterday. The aim of the expert committee is to reduce the number of people in ICUs nationwide to 300 by Christmas.
Finally, one more day, the number of people who ended up after complications related to the coronavirus remained high, reaching 85 on Sunday.
Second Sunday with a triple digit number of coronavirus cases
The only case during this entire period in which a three-digit number of new cases was registered daily was last Sunday, December 6, when 904 infections were reported.
It should be noted that in the last 24 hours, 15,792 tests were carried out for the coronavirus (9,432 molecular tests and 6,360 rapid tests), a number of tests increased compared to those carried out a week ago (12,968). It was previously known that in a total of 1,245 rapid tests in Attica today, only 19 have tested positive for the coronavirus.

Speaking of the variation of new cases over the weekend, the adjunct professor of the EKPA School of Medicine, Gikas Majorkinis, explained that these days fewer tests are usually carried out, while on the contrary the percentage of positivity increases.
“The levels of positivity vary greatly from day to day. Fewer exams are conducted on weekends, as there are fewer people interested in taking the exam and there are fewer workshops running.” But the percentage is higher as those who attend to the tests they are those that present the most serious symptoms “, said this Friday from the Ministry of Health, Mr. Majorkinis.
Note here that EODY is expected to announce the official coronavirus positivity index starting next week.
The trend to reduce the epidemiological burden is evident
Experts have reported since the beginning of the week an obvious trend of reducing the epidemiological burden, which, however, remains high, especially in northern Greece, while for the first time there is a relative stabilization of intubated and deaths from the pandemic.
At the end of the week, the contraction of the epidemiological burden showed contraction trends, similar to those of last week. “In Attica the reduction remained between 8% and 10% compared to the previous week, while Thessaloniki achieved a reduction of up to 30% compared to the previous week,” Majorkinis said.
Experts’ concern about “irregularities” in the middle of the holidays
Professor of Pediatric Infectious Diseases, Vana Papaevangelou, spoke on the same day about stabilizing new intubations and deaths from coronavirus. As he said, the average number of new cases in the last seven days was 1,500 cases as of Friday.
“This invisible enemy is still among us and awaits us,” said Vana Papaevangelou. “Crowds and indoor gatherings are the best opportunity to broadcast at night,” he said, looking at the festive season that is beginning.
