The European Union today condemned “in the strongest terms” the execution of Iranian dissident Ruhollah Zam, reiterating its opposition to the death penalty “under any circumstances,” according to a statement issued.
The EU also considers it an “urgent need” of the Iranian authorities respect the rights of the accused and “stop resorting to televised confessions to establish and prove his guilt,” stressed in the statement from the representative of the head of European diplomacy Josep Borrell.
For its part, France, which had granted Ruhollah Zam asylum, described his execution as a “barbaric and unacceptable act” through the Foreign Ministry.
“France strongly condemns this serious blow to freedom of expression and freedom of the press in Iran. barbarous and unacceptable act“contrary to the international commitments of this country,” a ministry spokesman said in a statement.
