These days, bestially armored 4×4 vehicles such as the Armed Forces have never seen before, parade one after another through the impassable Greek roads, in mountains and ravines, demonstrating their capabilities, their weapons and armor. The last to “parade” through the mud and mountains was a vehicle made in Europe. However, demonstrations of other armored vehicles had been preceded by Greek, Israeli, Spanish, Serbian and other companies, which showed keen interest in construction but also interest in ELVO.
The Greek government decided to remain self-sufficient in the construction of military vehicles of all kinds and for this reason wanted to build a “national vehicle”. A vehicle that will replace Stager and Mercedes. The objective of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is the implementation of a program worth 800 million euros in a period of 10 years. An ambitious program that greatly upset Turkey, after Turkish newspapers wrote that “Greece wants to build armored vehicles under our noses.”
10,000 vehicles since 1979
In this way, the Greek Armed Forces say goodbye in 2021 to the mythical Mercedes and the also mythical Stager REO. ELVO has been assembling them for 41 years, having traveled millions of kilometers not only in Greece but also in countries where Greece had sent military peacekeeping missions.
Mercedes jeeps have been manufactured continuously from 1979 to the present, with almost no cosmetic changes, with only gradual improvements in their technological baggage, equipment and active and passive safety. A total of 10,000 vehicles (and 250 right-hand drive vehicles have been built for the Cyprus National Guard) in various variants, such as: personnel / cargo transport (the most common version), command vehicle, ambulance and transport of armament. After 41 years, jeeps and PEOs have not only reached the end of their lives, but they also do not meet any of NATO’s new safety and security standards. New vehicles must be equipped with windows and windshields, as well as in the passenger compartment.
TA M1117 Guardian
At the same time, GEETHA is showing interest in acquiring used M1117 Guardian rubber armored vehicles in the US, which have been launched by the US military and offered by the US government at a price. bargain (transportation costs only). These vehicles still exist in Europe and it is easier (and cheaper) to transport them to Greece. This type was developed in the late 90s and has a strong armor that can withstand even a 5 kg mine blast, but also against fragments of 155 mm artillery shells that explode at a distance of 15 meters from the vehicle, while having a “run flut”. tires.
The tender for the supply of the new national vehicle is already underway so the final selection of the new Greek Army vehicle will be made as soon as possible, which will be combined with the sale of ELVO. It is not ruled out that in mid-March the new national vehicle that Greece will prefer will be presented, as well as the replacement of the legendary “national rifle” G3 / A3.
