Albania: Mass protests over 25-year-old murder – Interior Minister resigns

The resignation was presented today by the Albanian Interior Minister for the murder of a 25-year-old by a police officer.

The 25-year-old, identified by Albanian media as Klodian Rasa, was killed early Tuesday in an incident of excessive use of force by a police officer, as described by the police, during the night curfew. imposed in the country to restrict the spread of the coronavirus.

Police initially said Rasa had not been ordered to stop and that he was carrying a weapon, but later emphasized that the young man was unarmed.

The murder unleashed violent protests yesterday, in which nine policemen were injured, and today police forces used tear gas and water cannons to disperse a crowd of protesters who had gathered in front of the Interior Ministry building.

“I have decided to resign irrevocably from the post of Albania’s Interior Minister. I have done everything possible to leave a trace of regularity in the performance of my duties,” Interior Minister Sander Lesay said in a statement.

With the protests spreading to other Albanian cities besides Tirana, Prime Minister Edi Rama condemned the police action, calling it an insane violation of the law and apologizing to the government and state, while accepting the resignation of his minister.

However, the Albanian Prime Minister defended the work of the police and also triumphed against the President of the Republic, Ilir Meta, and the opposition, who, according to him, are behind the demonstrations on behalf of the 25-year-old for his benefits politicians.

The opposition as a whole condemned the incident, calling the execution of the young man the culmination of excessive use of violence against citizens and an indication of the use of the police for the benefit of politics and government interests.

It should be noted that this afternoon several hundred people, mostly teenagers, gathered in front of the Ministry of the Interior building. A Reuters witness saw police chasing protesters in the squares of Tirana. Similar demonstrations took place in other cities, but without the same level of violence.
