Pfizer and BioNTech confirm that the hackers who attacked the European Medicines Agency targeted the coronavirus vaccine documents and managed to steal part of it.

According to the BBC, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) reports that it has been hit by a cyberattack and documents related to the Covid-19 vaccine have been intercepted.

According to the joint Pfizer-BioNTech statement: “Coreper has been the target of a cyberattack and some have illegally accessed certain documents related to the Covid-19 candidate vaccine.”

“None of the BioNTech or Pfizer systems have been compromised and we do not know if the personal data of the study participants has been leaked,” the two companies added.

It is not yet clear whether the documents for the Moderna vaccine, which is also being evaluated by Coreper, have been violated.

It was not immediately clear when or how the attack occurred, who was responsible, or what other information may have been leaked.

BioNTech’s detailed announcement reads:

“Today, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) informed us that the agency had been hacked and that some documents related to the candidate COVID-19 vaccine, BNT162b2, had been illegally stored on an EMA server. It is important to note that no BioNTech or Pfizer systems have been compromised and we are not aware that some study participants were identified through illegally accessed data. We are currently awaiting further information on the EMA investigation and will respond appropriately and in accordance with EU law. The EMA has assured us that the cyber attack will not have an impact on the vaccine approval schedule.

Given critical public health issues and the importance of transparency, we continue to provide clarity on all aspects of vaccine development and regulatory processes. “Our focus remains working closely with governments and regulators to deliver the COVID-19 vaccine to people around the world in the safest and most effective way possible to end this devastating pandemic.”
