The campaign of eight prefectures of the country, of West Attica, but also of the pressure that ICUs are receiving due to the coronavirus, was pointed out by the Minister of Health, Vassilis Kikilias.

Shortly before the start of the briefing, EODY announced 1,677 new cases of coronavirus in our country in the last 24 hours. Likewise, another 95 deaths and 578 intubated were announced at the ICU.

The Health Minister stressed that there is a worrying increase in cases in West Attica, while revealing the suffocating pressure on the health system. As he said, ICUs are in the “red” with 83% coverage nationwide. In Attica the occupancy is 77%, while in Thessaloniki it is 95%.

According to the data presented, the majority of cases are now between 40 and 64 years old, while at the age of 75 and over and at the age of 65 to 74 there is a significant incidence of the disease and an increase in new cases in a 5% in the last month.

Tsiodra cares

Mr. Kikilias said that shortly before the briefing he had spoken with Professor Sotiris Tsiodras and shared his concerns with him.

“The situation is worrying in West Attica, hospital admissions in the last three days are almost equal to discharges, while the majority of new cases per 100,000 inhabitants are observed in the prefectures of Pieria, Drama, Kilkis, Pella, Imathia, Thessaloniki, Larissa and Florina. “Mr. Kikilias pointed out, relaying what Mr. Tsiodras told him.

Mr. Kikilias emphasized that after five weeks of lockdown, the positivity of the virus continues to rise and the risk bell sounded for the holidays, if we do not follow the measures.

“With these daily incidents, do we prioritize the Christmas message as a society or does our sense of individual perception prevail? Are we a caring society? “Vassilis Kikilias asked and continued:” Are we aware that we have 578 intubated people in hospitals? Mobility has shown a slight upward trend, despite the lockdown. “The question that arises, and it is simple and difficult, is where do you treat fellow citizens, where can you find an intensive care bed, if the going gets tough.”

He said that after five weeks of confinement there is a balance in the number of admissions, but also in terms of being discharged from hospitals with Covid. “If there really is a third wave, as some scientists say, or the spread continues,” the Health Minister wondered, “where will we treat our fellow citizens if cases increase after complacency, relaxation or possibly the lifting of some measures “.

“Different this Christmas”

Like he said, this Christmas will be different. The celebration of love and solidarity and respect for the elderly, our support for doctors and nurses are on the one hand and on the other our personal interest and if this will lead us to behave irresponsibly. “The normal image these Christmas days is that parents hug their children and exchange gifts. This cannot be done at these parties. You have to be more careful this Christmas. “

As Vassilis Kikilias added, there is light at the end of the tunnel and this will be the vaccination that will be carried out safely and organized in a national campaign. The parties, the church, but also all actors in society, will support vaccination, he said, adding that the vaccine is safe and “this message should reach even the most remote village in the country.”

141 meetings of the Coronavirus Committee

Speaking after the Minister of Health, Secretary General of Public Health Panagiotis Prezerakos outlined the plan to deal with the coronavirus during all this time. “Everything worked under the guidance of a committee of 31 experts, who offered everything by their own hands,” he said, adding that 141 meetings were held with an average duration of 3.5-4 hours.

As he pointed out, every decision that then came to the political leadership was taken unanimously or by majority. “In a matter of months, we have doubled the country’s capacity to carry out inspections,” Prezerakos continued, emphasizing the staffing of the country’s laboratories and cooperation with the private sector, with the result that the ministry manages to reach 27,500 inspections. in a day. .

“It just came to our notice then. Essentially, we must continue what we have done so far. Develop this responsible behavior,” said the Secretary of Public Health. “As we celebrate Easter differently, we are sure to celebrate Christmas in a different, “he said, adding, however, that” the light in the tunnel is already visible. To maintain this ray of optimism ”.
