Prosecutors are proposing a sentence of two years in prison and two more with suspension for the corruption scandal and abuse of power attributed to former French President Nicolas Sarkozy.

The right-wing politician is accused of trying to obtain information illegally in 2014 about a judicial decision that concerned him, offering a favorable transfer to a judge. In addition to Nicolas Sarkozy, two of his closest associates, lawyer Thierry Erzog and Justice of the Peace Gilbert Aziber, are involved in the case. All three have denied the charges and on Wednesday and Thursday their lawyers will try to persuade the court. The decision is expected to be announced later.

Although this is the first trial in which Nicolas Sarkozy appears as a defendant, there are several cases pending against him, the most important of which is the illegal financing of his 2012 election campaign.
