Data on the development of the pandemic in Italy are worrying, where according to the Ministry of Health 14,842 new infections and 634 deaths were registered in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of victims to 61,240. According to experts, if these rates continue, the country will have the highest number of deaths in all of Europe by the end of the week.
Britain currently has the worst death toll with over 62,000 dead.
The positivity index in Italy has dropped from 12.3 yesterday to 9.9, however it remains high and today’s cases as well as deaths are higher than yesterday, 13,720 and 528 respectively.
At the same time, the regions hardest hit by the pandemic are showing an increase in infections. There were 3,145 cases in Veneto today, up from 2,550 yesterday, Lombardy 1,656 (1,562), Emilia Romagna 1,624 (less than 1,891 yesterday), Lazio 1,501 (1,372) and Campania 1,080 (1,060). Across the country, since the start of the pandemic, the total has reached 1,757,394.
The seriousness of the situation was explained by Gianni Retsa, general director of the Public Health Service, who explained that “there may be a tendency to a slight decrease in positivity, but it is slow and insufficient.”
For this reason, he called on everyone to remain vigilant at high levels and comply with the measures. “We cannot do anything to reverse the situation.” He assured that vaccination in Italy will begin when the competent European authority gives the “green light”, which is expected by the end of the year, while he described the start of vaccinations in Great Britain as a “historical fact”.
