Nepal and China have announced the new height of the Himalayas, however the problem is not simple …
Mount Everest is still the “roof” of the world, but with a new height since it was measured 86 cm higher, now reaching 8,848.86 meters. Negligible difference for us, but very worrying for geologists.
China’s previous measurement was 4 meters (!) Shorter than the current one, showing the tremendous geological fluctuations that have existed in the region for at least 20 years.
The measurement operation was organized by China and Nepal, with specialized mountaineering teams climbing both sides of the mountain.
It was such an important event, that it was announced by Chinese President Xi Jinping during his visit to Kathmandu in 2019.
Because height gain is worrisome
For those who do not remember, in 2015 there was a very strong earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale in Nepal that killed 9,000 people.
Somewhere, a “war” broke out between geologists over whether to go up or down Mount Everest and it was this earthquake that brought the measure.
The big concern, however, is the fact that the height that Everest appears to have “conquered” attests to the increased movement of tectonic plates in the area.
