A request to put all Katerini municipal units in a state of disaster and emergency was submitted by the Municipality of Katerini in Civil Protection, due to very heavy rains and the problems they created.
The mayor of Katerini, Costas Koukodimos, speaking to GRTimes.gr, claims that the danger from current weather events may have decreased, however the city is protected for new intense phenomena expected Wednesday, as forecasters warn.
The catastrophe that struck Pieria last night with heavy rains and very strong winds blowing from the Thermaic Gulf, resulted in flooding on the Katerini coastal road network. The waves eroded the coast and the sea invaded the land.
“We made a request to enter a state of disaster and emergency, as the prefecture had problems everywhere. We had a problem in Svorono, Pieria. A stream that under normal conditions flowed an insignificant amount of water, inflated! Fortunately, not there were great disasters, beyond from flooding in surrounding fields and some backyards. We also had a problem with the Exochi and Trilofos dams. We were afraid for the Pelekas river, but we overcame the danger ”, the mayor of Katerini usually says on GRTimes.gr.
According to Mr. Koukodimos, at this moment the wind has dropped and the water has decreased, but the “look” is focused on the next day, since according to him, Meteorologists warn of intensifying weather on Wednesday.
“The machines are operating on the Katerini coastal network, creating a wall of sand so that the wave does not re-enter land. THE General Secretariat of Civil Protection “This morning he sent a 112 message to citizens, warning them to limit their movements for the next few days,” emphasizes Mr. Koukodimos.
It should be noted that the General Secretariat for Civil Protection has issued advice to citizens on taking measures to protect themselves from the dangers arising from the occurrence of severe meteorological phenomena (Read in detail at the end of the article).
“The great loss is in the hospitals”
According to the mayor of Katerini, the real bet to be won at the moment concerns the coronavirus. There are currently 80 patients in the Covid-19 unit, while 13 are intubated so far.
“The effort of the nurses and doctors is moving as they fight every day. There is a problem of understaffing, while many doctors and nurses are sick. Cases have dropped, but the number of patients is the same. The pressure remains. “We are afraid of the 3rd wave of the pandemic,” he says.
Finally, Mr. Koukodimos affirms that two doctors from the “Errikos Dunan” Hospital in Athens came to Katerini to help in the fight against the coronavirus, while waiting for the arrival of two more doctors.
