A Palestinian teenager was shot dead by Israeli forces during clashes during a protest rally in the occupied West Bank, the Palestinian Ministry of Health said.

Ali Ayman Nasr Abu Aliya, 13, “succumbed to his injuries after being shot in the stomach” during the riots north of Ramallah, the ministry said in a statement.

He was shot during a demonstration in Mugair village and then transported in critical condition to a hospital in Ramallah, where he ended up, he added.

According to the mayor of Mughair, quoted by the official Palestinian Wafa news agency, the army “violently dispersed” Palestinians protesting against the establishment of an Israeli settlement in the area. Four other Palestinians were injured by Israeli gunfire, Wafa reported.

Asked by Agence France-Presse, the army said it was “aware of reports that some rioters were injured and one Palestinian was killed,” but denied using live ammunition.

The Israeli army calls the dead a riot

According to the military, “dozens of rioters threw stones at soldiers and policemen at the border and tried to roll stones and burn tires” on a highway, “endangering the lives of civilians” who were there.

“The security forces prevented the riots from blocking the road and responded by using means to quell the riots,” the army said.

The field of confrontation is the Palestinian town of Mougair.

The Palestinian village of Mughair is close to several Jewish settlements and has been the scene of clashes between Palestinian and Israeli settlers in the past.

It is also adjacent to an area called Ras Al-Tin where Israel is threatening to demolish a school, prompting condemnation in early November by the European Union, which co-financed the construction of the school.

The West Bank is a Palestinian territory occupied by the Israeli army since 1967. More than 450,000 Israelis live in Jewish settlements that are considered illegal under international law in the West Bank, home to some 2.8 million Palestinians.
