Two additional measures for northern Greece, which is in the “vortex” of the coronavirus, announced the Deputy Minister of Civil Protection and Crisis Management during the briefing on the course of the virus in our country.

As of Monday, December 7, the following will apply:

  1. Those who are detected positive for coronavirus at our land borders will not be allowed to enter the country.
  2. Visits to the monasteries of Mount Athos are prohibited for those who do not live there permanently.

At the same time, he clarified that in the case of areas where the measures are not working, taking stricter measures is one way.

86.1% of active cases in 5 regions: almost half of them in Central Macedonia

As Mr. Hardalias explained, the previous measures, as well as the extension of the confinement until December 14, were based exclusively on the epidemiological picture.

Currently, the active confirmed cases in the country that have not yet completed their quarantine are 16,617.

Of those:

  • 7,031, or 42%, are in the Central Macedonia region
  • 3,267, that is, 19.7%, are in Attica
  • 1,777, or 10.7%, are in Thessaly
  • 1,590 or 9.6% are in East Macedonia and Thrace
  • 632, or 3.8%, are in Western Macedonia

In total, 86.1% of the cases are located in five of the thirteen regions of the country, 66.4% in northern Greece and 19.7% in Attica.

The Undersecretary of Civil Protection explained that this difference is due to the fact that the measures are not observed to the same degree in all areas.

Concerns for 6 areas

Mr. Hardalias expressed his great concern about the epidemiological burden in the last week in six areas: Xanthi, Drama, Pella, Florina, Pieria and Imathia.

The situation in these areas is as follows:

  • 587 cases in Pieria, of which 80 are hospitalized
  • 584 cases in Pella, of which 84 are hospitalized
  • 486 cases in Imathia, of which 103 are hospitalized
  • 454 cases in Drama, of which 83 are hospitalized
  • 376 cases in Xanthi, of which 38 are hospitalized
  • 172 cases in Pieria, of which 26 are hospitalized

In fact, in the areas there is a shift of coronavirus clusters from urban centers to villages. For this reason, Nikos Hardalias called for compliance with the measures and special attention.

High risk areas

Finally, despite the small decline in cases, the Undersecretary recommended paying attention to Thessaloniki, Grevena, Larissa, Magnesia, Halkidiki, Kilkis, Karditsa, Serres, Trikala and Kavala.

The situation in these areas is as follows:

  • 4,297 cases in Thessaloniki
  • 873 cases in Larissa
  • 402 cases in Magnesia
  • 276 cases in Halkidiki
  • 181 cases in Kilkis
  • 253 cases in Karditsa
  • 572 cases in Serres
  • 249 cases in Trikala
  • 338 cases in Kavala
