Koronaios: The situation in the country remains difficult – With 100 dead and ICU in the red, nothing opens

[ad_1]

The extension of the general confinement until December 14 announced by the government’s spokesman, Stelios Petsas, did not surprise anyone. The epidemiological burden remains alarmingly high across Greece, with Thessaloniki and other northern cities still in the red.

The reaction of the experts is indicative, who have been emphasizing for days that the evolution of the pandemic does not allow the lifting of restrictive measures. As the strictest significantly point out, the last thing we need to worry about right now is lifting the blockade and “rescuing” Christmas and the festive mood.

His main argument is that the health system is still under enormous pressure, with an increase in ICU patients. At the same time, the daily average of deaths from the coronavirus pandemic remains terrifying, persisting at alarming numbers, often exceeding 100.

The chronicle of a previously announced decision

The epidemiological panorama of the country in the last 24 hours does not allow in any case not even the discussion to lift the restrictive measures.

It has been clear since the first lockdown that a premature or careless lifting of restrictive measures will have disastrous results and possibly an outbreak of the third wave of the deadly virus in the country.

Ringing bells, the scientists gathered in the schools stressed that at present it is not possible to talk about opening schools or any other sector.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis “showed” the path the country will follow, with the Prime Minister clarifying that nightly entertainment and bars will reopen only when we have a vaccine, while retail can be opened at the end of December, only with rules and if the epidemiology the image shows a clear improvement.

The other big “thorn” is the schools, which are not expected to open until 2021. This stems from today’s meeting of infectious disease specialists, who said “no” to the students’ return to school.

The government may not yet discuss opening the economy, with the exception of opening seasonal stores before Christmas.

The seasonal stores are expected to open on December 7, a decision that, according to Development and Investment Minister Adonis Georgiadis, was taken as these stores can only sell their products during this period.

Finally the schools for this year?

The issue of schools remains open, with the potential to be overwhelmingly in favor of the proposal to open after the Christmas break.

Many, including most infectious disease specialists on the government’s proposed committee, find it futile to reopen schools for just a week before closing them again for the Christmas break.

The risk will be high and the benefit negligible, as the epidemiological burden across the country remains high and the mobility of children returning to school will further exacerbate the already aggravated situation.

Thus, although the restrictive measures will remain in full force until December 14, that is, for two more weeks, some individual stores will open on Monday.

Specifically, as of December 7, the operation of retail stores of purely seasonal Christmas items is allowed, as well as their sale by supermarkets.

The exact form and time of operation will be announced tomorrow by the Secretary General for Commerce, Panagiotis Stampoulidis.

On the other hand, bars and nightclubs will be closed during the festivities, while very strict restrictions are contemplated, as Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis explained on Wednesday about the operation of restaurants, if finally both infectious disease specialists and businessmen accept it. . of the industry, with the latter declaring that an opening will be catastrophic for a few days if they are closed again soon after.

Mitsotakis’s decisions have been in effect for a week.

In any case, the prime minister’s speech, which was scheduled for tomorrow, as Stelios Petsas said, will take place next week.

This is an expected decision, since the situation in our country continues to be fluid.

However, experts estimate that it will be difficult to lift the measures on Halloween, extending the restrictions even until Easter, when the government intends to vaccinate almost 4.5 million citizens.
