The desperate situation that prevails in hospitals due to the coronavirus, was described by Nikolaos Kapravelos, Director of the ICU of the hospital “Papanikolaou” in Thessaloniki, highlighting that the data is overwhelming and health workers are terrified by the discussion about the opening of activities.
Certainly, he added, speaking with SKAI, instead of discussing what restrictive measures will be lifted, one should discuss what tactics we should follow to limit the spread.
“I see a marathon. It is not a road race or a sprint to open 14 or 21,” he said, adding that restrictive measures should be taken until the vaccine is released.
Despair on staff – No guard beds
Today, the vigil at “Papanikolaou” begins without an ICU bed available, something that, as Mr. Kapravelos said, is unthinkable. Even young people die of coronavirus while staff are very tired, both physically and mentally.
He described nurses crying when they have to go to bed after working hours because there are no other staff and the patient is in need and how they despair or lose them when they can’t find a mask in the drawer.
“The state easily applauds the hero, but when it comes to acting on behalf of these people, he still hesitates and today we are talking about an unhealthy assignment. If possible,” Kapravelos said.
In this health system, he added, it is impossible for the state to depend on openness.
Because the suitcases do not fall
When asked to comment on why pandemic numbers are not dropping, he said the spread is so great because now it runs in the family and no case that reaches hospitals is orphaned.
Then there are two questions, if the citizenship does not implement the self-control measures or the state measures are insufficient and not enough.
He described the tactics used to limit transmission as outdated and said that in no case can one speak of any opening in any area, be it red, orange or green.
According to Mr. Kapravelos, if we want to open some sectors, the virus must be detected and quarantined throughout Greece.
For this to happen, as in other countries, many tests must be carried out, patients must be limited and some sectors must be opened with timid steps.
The state added that it has to free doctors in terms of diagnostic tests since even with 40 euros it costs many to do them.
Intensive care doctors are not afraid of death
Mr. Kapravelos addressed all those who have a person of their own in the ICU, saying that “their dumb pain is also ours”.
He stressed that the staff is by his side even though he does not even know their name and does everything possible to save them.
“Intensive care physicians are not afraid of death. Let our fellow citizens know that,” he noted.
Sypsas: Pressure on the health system will show how we will open up
When the clubs and bars open “it will be a bit late,” said Nikolaos Sypsas, a specialist in infectious diseases, a professor at the University of Athens, a member of the Committee for the coronavirus.
Speaking to Mega, he stressed that “entertainment is unfortunately a transmitter of the virus” and added that the opening will depend on the pressure received by the NSS.
