The chain of transmission of the coronavirus in northern Greece proves to be particularly resilient, as after a month of quarantine for Thessaloniki and Serres and three weeks for the other regional units of Macedonia and Thrace, the cases remain stable above 2000. Today 2,186 cases were registered, a figure that refers to those reported by the National Public Health Organization (EODY) in mid-November, during the second week of emergency shutdown. Based on the data we have and according to the statements of the Minister of Health, Vassilis Kikilias, the possibilities of a new extension of the confinement are increasing.
Attica, Thessaloniki and Larissa they have the highest number of cases -375, 453 and 129 respectively. Currently about 700 cases are registered in 11 regional units in Macedonia and Thrace. In Thessaly, another 272 new cases of coronavirus are counted, in which the epidemic does not seem to be controlled either, despite the network of restrictive measures that has been implemented.
Last week the experts of the Commission participated in the information session of the Ministry of Health, Professor of Pediatrics Vana Papaevangelou and the professor of Epidemiology, Mr. Gikas Majorkinis He had stressed that the results of the blockade are not as expected, saying that the ban is slow to bear fruit and therefore will take longer. They also said that the cases are stabilizing with an apparent slight tendency to decrease, without being able to give further clarification on the reasons for the persistence of the epidemic.
New increase in the number of intubated
However, the outlook in hospitals and especially in ICUs is bleak, as the number of patients exceeds 4,200. The tough battle unfolding in hospitals also bears witness to the “hard data” of the intubated. On November 7, when the confinement began, the number of people intubated was 234 and in two weeks it doubled. On November 19, the number of intubated people was 504 and today it rises to 613.
Of these, 276 belong to the 18-39 and 40-64 age groups, which confirms the medical estimate that the coronavirus hits people “blind” regardless of their age and is not a virus that mainly affects the elderly. In fact, intubated people between 18 and 39 years old today are 13 compared to 12 yesterday.
Another 337 patients with Covid-19 infection receiving mechanical ventilation belong to the age group 65 years and over, of which 2/3 are men.
Aid to volunteer doctors
The greatest burden has been borne by hospitals in Macedonia and Thrace, where 70% of patients with Covid-19 infection are treated and where more than 1,600 people have died of the 2,606 total deaths from the epidemic.
Since this burden will continue in December, the Ministry of Health is trying to stimulate medical personnel in structures in northern Greece. In this context, the Minister of Health, Mr. Vassilis Kikilias announced Wednesday afternoon that the reinforcement of doctors from Macedonian and Thracian hospitals with medical missions from various members of NSS Attica doctors and private clinics has been launched. Doctors from the specialties necessary for the coronavirus epidemic, such as pulmonologists, pathologists, intensivists, from the Evangelismos, Attikon, Laiko, Pammakaristos, Asklipieio hospitals, as well as the HHG health group and the Errikos hospital offer their services. As for the doctors of the National Health Service, the Minister of Health announced that their salaries will be doubled as a token of appreciation by the ministry, while the same will be done with the volunteer nurses of the National Health Service who are in Thessaloniki. He also highlighted in his statements that the early lifting of the measures will bring more deaths and pressure on the system.
The x-ray of the spread of the coronavirus
Half of the cases reported today are registered in Attica, Thessaloniki, and Larissa: 979 out of 2,158 cases.
A large epidemiological burden is reflected in most areas of northern Greece. As an indication, the following are mentioned: Drama (79), Evros (49), Xanthi (59), Rodopi (40), Serres (54), Halkidiki (29), Kavala (65), Imathia (86), Pella (115), Pieria (71), Kozani (33), Florina (46).
Thessaly also shows that it is under pressure to exclude the heavy load. Apart from Larissa, which has consistently reported a triple-digit number of cases (today it has 129), Magnesia (45), Karditsa (41) and Trikala (57) have reported several cases.
Finally, on the epidemiological map, Etoloakarnania remains in a high position with 18 cases and Acaya with 23 cases of coronavirus.
