Crete: Man arrested for scratching and hanging two dogs in August

After months of investigations, the Cretan police authorities located and arrested the man who had tortured two dogs in Kerameia, Chania.

According to information cited by the local zarpanews.gr, “in the hands of the Hellenic Police is the perpetrator of the atrocious act in Kerameia who had scratched and hung two dogs from a tree” in the area.

The torture incident took place in mid-August, prompting a wave of reactions from animal welfare organizations and citizens across the country.

According to the report, in the summer the perpetrator was not immediately located, but the police had not stopped looking for him and finally Chania Security “unwrapped the thread” and arrested a 53-year-old farmer from Chania.

The dogs were found hanged, scratched, abused and tortured.

It is recalled that with an amendment submitted to the bill of the Ministry of Justice, stricter penalties are established for animal abuse and animal torture is considered a crime.

In detail, whoever kills or tortures animals is sentenced to up to ten years in prison, as well as a fine (up to 500 units a day, the amount of which is set at 50 to 100 euros each.

Provision for the definitive withdrawal of the animal

The prosecutor can temporarily remove the animal. only if the owner bears the cost of restoring his health. If the suspect or the accused or a third party representing the previous two does not pay the required amounts, the temporary dismissal of the Prosecutor’s Office becomes final. The prosecutor can also prohibit an offender from acquiring an animal again.

In addition, the prosecutor, when processing a report or complaint, can, after an on-site autopsy, determine the prevailing conditions in any pet shelter or kennel. If the conditions do not meet the specifications established by law, then the competent prosecutor determines the measures to be taken by the owner.
