The Deputy Minister of Health, Vassilis Kontozamanis, ruled out the possibility that everyone choose the vaccine they want from among those that will receive approval from the European Medicines Agency.
As he characteristically said during the regular briefing, “the coronavirus vaccines will be treated as one and we will not make any decisions.”
He explained that once they receive approval from the European Medicines Agency, it means that they will meet all safety requirements and will be given a marketing authorization.
He noted that this is also the case with the flu vaccine, which is a vaccine, there is no other option.
Clarification on special refrigerators for vaccines
Mr. Kontozamanis stated that the total number of refrigerators with special temperature conditions required for the vaccines that will arrive in the country is 14 and they have already reached seven and the rest will arrive this week. It will then be distributed to various parts of the country.
As you said, vaccines come at very low temperatures and are kept at temperatures of -70 degrees Celsius, but there is a period of time that they are kept in cold chain conditions of 2 to 8 degrees Celsius, and that makes not all vaccination centers need to have special refrigerators.
Vaccination is not mandatory
Regarding the health passport, he said that vaccination is not compulsory and the position of the EU regarding vaccination is clear.
There are, he added, “discussions to keep the borders of each country open, that is the firm position of the EU, however in any case if there are decisions at the EU level we will follow them, but for the moment there is no discussion.”
The objective, he stressed, is to inform the public about the benefits of vaccination and the safety of vaccines, since they will be on the market when they receive the required marketing authorization from the European Medicines Agency.
