The government is considering extending the blockade for one more week, until December 14, according to information from SKAI.
On Thursday, government spokesman Stelios Petsas announced that the measures would run until December 7. However, a government official quoted by SKAI said the country would not open before December 14, with the possible exception of primary schools and kindergartens.
Decisions are expected to be made by the end of next week, while these will be judged by two factors: the number of coronavirus cases and the pressure on the national health system. The intention of the government is to make the “opening” horizontal, but this will depend on whether it is judged that there are areas where exceptions should be made.
25,000 active cases
During today’s coronavirus briefing, Pediatric Infectious Diseases Professor Vana Papaevangelou stated that “the phasing out of the measures has not yet been discussed in our committee and will be reviewed next week based on new epidemiological data.” The pressure on the country’s ICUs is an important criterion for our decisions ”.
Ms Papaevangelou underlined that the curve for new coronavirus cases in Greece is decreasing, but the epidemiological burden remains stable at a high level. It is estimated that today there are more than 25,000 active cases in our country, he added.
The teacher noted that there has been a reduction in cases in many areas over the past week, but this is happening at a slower rate than desired. Yet at the same time, three weeks after the closure was implemented, cases are increasing in some areas of the country.
There is also an increase in the average age of new cases, which is currently estimated at 48 years, while there were around 3,200 new cases in the age group over 65, meaning that the pressure on the NSS will continue. Papaevangelou said.
The 18 congested areas
For his part, Nikos Hardalias referred to the 18 areas that are particularly stressed.
These are: Pella, Drama, Thessaloniki, Grevena, Florina, Pieria, Imathia, Serres, Larissa, Kilkis, Halkidiki, Magnesia, Xanthi, Karditsa, Evros, Kavala, Rodopi and Trikala.
“These areas remain with the majority of cases, regardless of the course of the disease exacerbation curve in the area.” Obviously, of course, failures or non-observance of measures in other areas can very easily put them in the dark. instead of these 18 areas “, added the Vice Minister of Civil Protection.
At the same time, he stressed that the increase in viral load observed in recent days in Achaia, Etoloakarnania and Ilia, that is, in the Western Greece region, is of particular concern.
