The highest price for coronavirus tests is set by the Ministry of Development.
Speaking during the briefing on the course of the coronavirus pandemic in our country, Commerce Secretary General Panagiotis Stampoulidis spoke about the phenomena of speculation and asymmetric price increases, announcing a ceiling in the price of coronavirus tests, but also in a series of goods and services.

“From the beginning, the government has made the guarantee of public health and citizens’ access to it an absolute priority. Both parameters are not negotiable for us.
Our concern was and continues to be social cohesion and the proper functioning of the market. We support healthy competition practices, but only when they work.
But now that most of the market is suspended, we have to intervene institutionally in the face of asymmetric price rises and speculation.
Nowadays, knowing that for preventive purposes, virus detection tests are widely used by citizens, either alone or by companies on behalf of their employees, having mainly ensured the availability of these products and services and by At the same time, having identified the cost of making them available to users, we proceed to define their maximum charge price.
Thus, in the coming days, the Minister of Development and Investments will present a pertinent amendment, which will authorize him to be able to set maximum final prices, in goods and services, necessary to guarantee public health and the economic interests of citizens.
Immediately after the vote and publication in the Official Gazette of the provision, a Ministerial Decision will be issued, which will implement the maximum final charge rates for conducting tests for the detection of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, to each private provider of the specific service. Prices are as follows:
a) As a maximum loading price for the molecular RT-PCR test for the detection of coronary SARS-CoV-2, forty EURO (€ 40.00)
b) the maximum charge for a rapid test for coronary antigen SARS-CoV-2 (rapid test) is 10 EUR (10.00);
From the first moment of the pandemic that broke out in the country and the resulting health crisis, caused by the coronavirus, the Greek government and the Ministry of Development and Investments took charge immediately, using institutional and technical tools, which ensured:
- The uninterrupted and continuous supply of the market.
- The adequacy of health protection assets (possibility of national production of antiseptics, masks, etc., eliminating licensing time).
- Citizen access to low-cost products and services.
Specifically:
1. We have developed and implemented the e-Consumer digital platform, with which consumers can now compare sale prices of products between supermarkets, intensifying competition and ensuring price transparency.
2. We were the first in Europe to activate the Sanitary Ware Inventory Register, thus having total control over the adequacy of assets in the private economy.
3. We have reduced VAT from 24% to 6% on a wide range of goods, necessary for the protection of public health, drastically reducing the cost of living for citizens.
4. We have established a fixed gross profit margin on goods and services, defined in the same way as the corresponding periods other than restrictive measures, thus avoiding speculation, maintaining low inflation and ultimately protecting income from the citizens.
5. We have improved the 1520 citizen service. More than 300 thousand consumers and professionals have been attended by telephone and electronically to date.
6. We supervise with the current state control mechanism (ELAS-DIMEA-EAD-LS-SEPE-Municipal Police) compliance with the measures for the protection of citizens, carrying out more than 660 thousand inspections throughout the territory.
