The possibility of Patras becoming … Thessaloniki, with an outbreak of coronavirus, due to the feast of Saint Andrew, the patron saint of the city, on November 30, scares the government and in this context Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis had today, Friday, a telephone contact with the mayor of Patras Konstantinos Peletidis and the regional governor of Western Greece Nectarios Farmakis.

The Prime Minister stressed the need for strict observance of sanitary measures in view of the feast of the patron saint of Patras, Agios Andreas, on Monday.

In particular, he highlighted the fact that lately there has been an increase in the health burden in the area, a fact that requires even more attention from citizens and called on local authorities to contribute to this.

On Thursday, in addition, the government spokesman Stelios Petsas had asked the citizens of Patras to observe the measures, to avoid congruence and to celebrate as a family, not exchanging visits which in any case are prohibited.

It is recalled that at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic in the spring, when the government had decided to cancel the carnival events throughout Greece, the municipality of Patras had supported this decision and had complied by canceling the famous carnival in the city.

Obviously, due to the closure, the religious celebration of San Andrés will be limited. The example of Thessaloniki, where the celebration of Agios Dimitrios was fatal, is called to make everyone in Patras too.

The Prime Minister himself during the debate in Parliament on the coronavirus had admitted mismanagement in Thessaloniki, saying that the measures in the co-capital should have been taken a week earlier and photographing the Church and local government, which insisted on the celebration of Saint Demetrius.
