Koronaios: Why the situation in the “red” zones does not improve

The coronavirus continues its deadly course in many areas of our country, since despite the blockade there does not seem to be an improvement in the health situation in areas such as northern Greece.

Christos Hadjichristodoulou, professor of hygiene and epidemiology at the University of Thessaly, answers this question.

Mr. Hadjichristodoulou emphasized that such a case is that of Magnesia, a regional unit that “passed” early in the red level, before the universal closure simply because it bordered Larissa and there was information about the movement of citizens.

He also highlighted that while in three regional units of Thessaly the transmission rate, the so-called Rt, in recent days is close to 1 in Magnesia it remains slightly above 1.

Why is the situation not improving in some areas?

“The fact that it is not improving even though it was taken earlier in the emergency measures, we have to see this a bit and it may be related to other areas that are not improving as fast as we expected,” said the professor.

The phenomenon that some areas do not respond the same as others, may be due to non-compliance with the measures while he said that the cases caused by the coronavirus may have a downward course next week, however this will depend on compliance with the measures.

“I believe that if we continue implementing the measures with the same determination, next week we will have a decrease in cases and possibly by the end of next week, at the beginning of the next, we will have an improvement in the health system.”

When will restrictive measures be relaxed?

Regarding how and when the restrictive measures will be relaxed, he stressed that first the situation in the Health System must be improved and then one must start talking about the uprising, which in any case will be gradual, starting from the schools.

Regarding the possibility of a third wave or rolling closure, he said that in order not to re-close the three basic rules must be applied correctly: proper use of the mask, distancing, hand hygiene.
