The background behind the request of private clinics in Thessaloniki for the treatment of 200 coronavirus patients, was revealed by the Deputy Minister of Health, Vassilis Kontozamanis, during the briefing at the Ministry of Health.
“A great battle is being fought and no one should be lost. The requirement was already established during the first wave, based on legislation and a recent law that was passed. The imperative is one of our last weapons against the pandemic. We implemented this measure. in Thessaloniki, not to be surprised. There was a need for COVID beds. Discussions had started a long time ago. Here to say that there was good cooperation with the private sector from the first wave. “There was agreement on incidents not related to COVID”, said.
Regarding the case of Thessaloniki, he said that they took this measure “not to be surprised.” He reiterated that the forces of the health system are not inexhaustible. “There was a need for additional hospital beds for coronavirus patients, in order to handle the difficult situation in Thessaloniki.”
He said that “discussions have started for a long time with private clinics, there was a difference of opinion and we resorted to the request.” He said that with the private sector there is good cooperation since the first wave of the pandemic, where there are agreements that are maintained regarding the provision of beds in ICU and simple beds for the treatment of non-covid patients and this cooperation continues.
He added that discussions are also taking place with the Rehabilitation Centers and perhaps “in a future application we will use these units.” He pointed out that at this time it was decided not to use the Rehabilitation Centers because, as he explained to them, “we mainly wanted to treat mild cases. The Rehabilitation Centers do not even have the nursing units that have a private clinic and their personnel are trained in other types of management ”.
As Mr. Kontozamanis said, “everything was done with a plan evaluating the needs we have and in any case it was done to avoid unfavorable development”.
Referring to the possibility of ordering doctors, he said that there is an invitation to private doctors to join forces with the NSS in specific specialties that are needed and “if necessary, the law gives us the tool, we will proceed with the order of doctors.”
Kikilias: We are not Soviets: we do controls when we have to
Vassilis Kikilias also argued that there is “good cooperation” with the cooperation of doctors, while clarifying that, when necessary, the government is doing what is necessary to ensure public health.
In fact, the Minister of Health attacked the opposition on the issue of imperatives, characteristically saying that “we are not Soviet. We do controls when we have to.” He explained that there is no economic issue because “controls are being compensated” and attributes to the Opposition “disproportion with society”, pointing out that “a few want the country to fail.”
Referring to the prevailing situation in hospitals in northern Greece, the Minister of Health highlighted that in 28 days ICU beds increased by 360%.
Sarafianos’ explanations for the refusal of clinicians to cooperate with the state
Grigoris Sarafianos, president of the Panhellenic Association of Private Clinics, whose clinic is under supervision, spoke in the main MEGA newsletter.
Mr. Sarafianos tried to justify why he initially rejected the request of the Ministry of Health to provide his clinic for the treatment of patients with Covid-19. He said he had objections, as his clinic staff were not trained to deal with coronavirus cases, while he did not want other patients to be treated in the same building.
“Our objections were that the planning was for the simultaneous treatment of patients with and without coronavirus on different floors. I reacted to this, because we could not be responsible for the spread of the virus. We can’t seal the space.
The other was the question of staff training. Treating coronavirus patients requires excessive protection and education. “Our staff was inexperienced.”
He added: “With the good humor of the commander of the 3rd Health District, it was resolved, the Ministry of Health will undertake its training. Also patients who do not have coronavirus will go to Military Hospital 424, and the rest with coronavirus will come here.
Otherwise, as you pointed out, there was no problem. “Our willingness to offer is unquestionable. This is our job. “We are fully aware of what is happening in our city,” he concluded.
The plan for the order
The clinics that have been ordered are the “Sarafianos” clinic and the “General Clinic”. The governors of health districts 3 and 4 have already visited both clinics.
In one of the two clinics, which has 100 beds, 50 patients are already being treated, of which 35 are kidney patients, while it also has four Intensive Care Units.
According to the business plan, patient transportation and staff training will be completed over the weekend.
All staff, doctors and nurses, a total of 85 people, must receive the appropriate training in one weekend to deal with Covid patients coming from hospitals.
One of the private hospitals has already filed precautionary measures to suspend the decision.
The operational plan of the Ministry of Health will be implemented in any region where there is a dramatic development of the pandemic.
