More than 500 fishermen in Senegal have contracted a mysterious skin disease after returning from the sea, a senior health official said.
These men come from various fishing villages around Dakar. They have been quarantined and are receiving treatment, according to Usman Guye, national director of the health information and education service.
“It is a dermatitis associated with an infectious disease”, explained. “We are reviewing it and hope to find out what it is about soon.”
On November 17, the Ministry of Health reported that these men had skin lesions on their faces, extremities, and in some cases genitalia. They also had a headache and a mild fever.
The first case occurred on November 12. He was a young man in his 20s who had blisters, puffiness on his face, dry lips, and red eyes.
Photos posted on social media sites show the rashes on these men’s hands and lips.
Guye said the navy would be sent to collect water samples for analysis.
