“Bulgaria’s refusal to approve the negotiating framework is not in line with the spirit of good neighborly relations. This position of the Bulgarian government is contrary to Article 2 of the 2017 friendship agreement (between North Macedonia and Bulgaria). “Our position is clear: we believe that European integration should not be held hostage to bilateral issues,” said a statement from the North Macedonian government, which was distributed to local media.

According to the government of North Macedonia, negotiations with the EU should not turn into negotiations with Bulgaria, and the country’s progress towards European integration must depend mainly on internal reforms related to accession funds, EU legislation. and compliance with European criteria.

A statement by the Government of North Macedonia declared that the “blockade” of Bulgaria “is a failure of the EU’s enlargement policy, a bad message for the entire region and a defeat for fundamental European values and principles.”

The Government of North Macedonia also expresses its appreciation for the special efforts of the German Presidency of the EU, as well as personal actions. from the Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel, to eliminate the impasse and start the country’s accession negotiations with the EU.

Remember that the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria, Ekaterina Zakharievasaid after the end of the current EU General Affairs Council that Sofia could not currently support the start of negotiations between the “27” and Skopje, due to open linguistic and historical differences between North Macedonia and Bulgaria.
