The Holy Synod of the Church of Greece reacted strongly to comments about the dismissal of Lagada metropolitan Ioannis, who fell asleep infected by the coronavirus.
In a statement, she spoke of having been attacked by some media, emphasizing that she had never supported the deniers of the pandemic and asking that there be no social racism for victims of the coronavirus.

“On the occasion of the dream of Blessed Metropolitan of Lagada, Mr. Ioannou, some journalists mocked his death in an uncivilized way and the testimony of his faith in Holy Communion, as if they had information about the cause of the transmission of the disease. The Holy Synod of the Church of Greece sadly finds that certain media never fail to target Orthodox Christians, the clergy and the laity, as their ideological opponent.
Faced with distortions of the Church’s discourse, it is recalled that the Church of Greece with its Circulars and Announcements:
a) always constitutes discipline in sanitary measures inside and outside the Holy Temples;
b) never supported the deniers of the pandemic;
c) never spread childish and pagan views that Orthodox priests or Christians in general were not going to get sick because of their status. On the contrary, the Holy Synod has been cooperating with the State since the beginning of the health crisis, and its members comply with the health regulations, urging the clergy and the faithful to comply with the restrictions imposed by the State and its scientific advisers. The Church obviously accepts the importance and mission of medical science, as the Bible dictates: “Honor the doctor as you should, taking into account his services for your needs, because the Lord built him” (Soph. Shirah 38 , 1), emphasizing the crucial presence of faith in God for the healing of believing man: “But at the same time pray to the Lord, and he will heal you” (Wisdom Shirah 38: 1).
Some would-be public leaders neurotically insist on participating exclusively in Holy Communion and imposing unscientific correlations with the spread of the coronavirus, challenging epidemiological evidence, and even deciding on “dogmatic and non-dogmatic” matters of faith. Since the democratic state guarantees religious freedom, they do not have the right to demand the state prohibition of Holy Communion as “unhealthy”, because they do not believe in themselves. And above all, they have no right to praise and ridicule the dream of a neighbor, because he was a clergyman of the Church, which they consider a faction and even their opponent.
We urge everyone not to engage in the cultivation of social racism, to attack and incriminate the sick and dead of the coronavirus pandemic for any reason. We ask everyone to remain restrained, to respect patients, doctors, nurses and those who fight for the treatment of patients, at the same time we ask everyone to show due respect to Blessed Metropolitan of Lagada, Litis and Rentinis, Sr. of his pastorate offered the maximum in all areas of his ministry. The pious crew of the Church of Greece in the pandemic continue to pray for the health and life of the people, while the clergy also perform the Divine Liturgy offering bloodless sacrifice to the Lord “for those who hate and love us” and “for the life of the world. ” and salvation ”.
