Indescribable sadness and excruciating pain swept through Parliament yesterday, November 13, 2020, the news (which we had been exorcising for days not to hear): our dear colleague and friend Giannis Mitropoulos has passed away.
How to believe that our cardiologist is no longer with us …
How can we accept that Giannis will not re-advise us, kindly and at the same time strictly, as he knew, about our own health problems?
How to accept the harsh reality that our community has lost its loving and smiling son?
The invincible reality of our days, the savage Covid-19 pandemic, struck our house and chose to deprive us of one of the most capable and trustworthy executives in Parliament, the cardiologist Ioannis Mitropoulos, at just 52 years old.
We have no words to express our infatuation with the unfair loss of John.
Giannis fought against the coronavirus, being hospitalized for several days in the “Sotiria” hospital. We were all anxious about his condition and sent him our positive energy and prayers, but sadly, they didn’t last long enough … The improvement in his health in the previous days had calmed us down a bit, but the tough virus came back stronger to put us from us, Giannis. When yesterday the abominable news was known, we did not have the strength to listen to it, nor now do we want to believe it, nor will we ever accept it.
Giannis Mitropoulos served for several years in the Health Service of the Greek Parliament and, together with his colleagues, was the “shield” of Parliament in our small and large health problems.
He was entrusted by the entire Parliament, his colleagues and Members of Parliament with our health issues, and he responded with boundless zeal and genuine interest, as a doctor and as a person, beyond the scope of his duties in his service in Parliament. His persuasive speech, as a distinguished and experienced cardiologist, but also his kindness and humanity, convinced us all to follow his advice and do more examinations, which often served as lifesavers for many of us. And John has always been there, to tire us out and insist that we not neglect our health.
He offered even more to our colleagues, such as with his active participation in LAV and in general in matters that have to do with the Association of Parliamentary Employees.
We will miss your kindness, your smile, your willingness to offer us all.
To his wife and children we express our deepest condolences, but also the promise that we will not forget John, either mentally or in practice.
We are sure that if John could tell us today and ask us something, then he would ask all of us to be careful and follow the precautionary rules strictly and reverently, to protect ourselves, our colleagues, our family members and our society from the pandemic.
