The controversial close adviser to the British Prime Minister, Dominic Cummings, reportedly resigned with immediate effect, as did the Prime Minister’s Office Communications Chief Lee Kane.
Cummings’ impending resignation had already been leaked, but the information so far indicates that he intends to leave after Christmas. Today, however, something seems to have changed, as Cummings left 10 Downing Street with a box, possibly containing his personal belongings.
Johnson’s office has yet to officially confirm the information, but it has not denied it either. Kane’s resignation was officially announced Wednesday, but he was also due to work for Christmas.
Cummings, like Kane, a former Brexit activist, broke the lockdown last May to travel with his family out of London on day trips. He was not popular with Conservative MPs, many of whom called for his removal, calling it a “new beginning.”
According to the BBC, Cummings’ resignation was “accelerated” given the “irritation he caused the team” at Downing Street and the appointment of a new chief of staff, Johnson. There have been many disagreements, the BBC notes, between various people in the prime minister’s office.
