Today’s Decisions for Elementary – Quick Test in Middle and High School Students – Policy

The possibility of closing primary schools as part of the second confinement, in order to limit mobility and therefore the transmission of the coronavirus, was left today, Friday 11/13, by the government representative Stelios Petsas.

“It is something that we will see today,” said Petsas (Alpha), hastening to clarify that “the closure of primary schools is also being considered to limit another source of mobility, and not because there is a problem of over transmission from schools.”

In this way he wanted to reconcile the narrative of the Ministry of Education that schools are not a hotbed of Covid-19, with the evident desire of Health to close primary schools, because if nothing else its operation results in parents and teachers move in, something that did not happen during the spring quarantine.

In fact, it appears that Niki Kerameos and Vassilis Kikilias have somewhat different approaches to this issue.

The Minister of Health last night (SKAI) had left open the possibility of closing primary schools, in case the epidemiological picture continues to deteriorate rapidly.

As he said, the situation is extremely critical and it is not ruled out that there will be a relevant recommendation from the Committee of Experts.

On the contrary, the Minister of Education, Niki Kerameos, said (SKAI) that the experts have not recommended the suspension of the operation of primary schools and invoked that the data shows that there is no tendency to dispersion within schools. However, he affirmed that if the decision is made to close primary schools, the Ministry of Education will move on two levels: Educational television, since 220 video lessons have been recorded, and Distance, modern and asynchronous education.

Suspending elementary schools, of course, also means special-purpose leave for more public and private sector employees.

However, it seems that this scenario is increasingly likely, in the context of an even more stringent universal lockdown of the spring rules (which will include the closing of borders, the “padlock” on public services and the reduction of the reasons allowed to travel, that is, SMS to 13033), although it is not yet known with certainty if secondary schools and high schools will open according to the calendar on November 30.

As Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced in Parliament on Thursday, “smartly targeted tests” will be conducted next week on middle and high school students to see if there is traffic and if they can open schools by the end of November. , as planned by the government.

“We have the algorithmic models to be able to run such sample tests, which will give us useful information, to see if we can open schools at the end of the month or if we will have to extend the training for a few more weeks.” from home, “said Mr. Mitsotakis, thus leaving all possibilities open for when gymnasiums and high schools finally reopen.

Obviously, this means that the lockdown may extend until mid-December, although the government wants to do everything possible to open the economy by Christmas.
