The new measures that are on the government’s table, after the imposition of the universal closure and the prohibition of night traffic, were developed by Stelios Petsas in the main MEGA newsletter.
As he said, the even tougher measures that will be imposed, if necessary, are oriented in two directions:
Squeaks in the palace of Sultan Tayyip Erdogan
- To further restrict travel
- In the closure of schools and the extension of the telework measure, in order to limit the professional activities that are left free.
The government spokesman even left open the possibility of extending the measures in December, although the government’s goal is to reopen in the last month of the year and operate the market by Christmas.
In order not to need to tighten or broaden the measures, Mr. Petsas appealed to the “Greek philotimes” to comply with the existing measures.
What led to the tightening of the measures?
The government spokesman explained that despite the measures that have been imposed for several days in northern Greece and other areas, the epidemiological burden remains high in Thessaloniki and northern Greece in general.
Furthermore, Mr. Petsas noted that there was greater mobility than the rigor of the existing measures would justify, with an increase in SMS compared to the first lockdown and generally relaxed demeanor.
These factors, combined with preventing further pressures on the NSS, have led to the imposition of stricter measures.
“No one is to blame when we are in such a regime, there is a fatigue that is expressed in relaxation,” said the government spokesman, adding that that is why the government has chosen to take earlier and faster preventive measures. He even thanked citizens for complying with the measures, but warned that “the few are capable of exploding the efforts of the many.”
Pressure on the NSS will peak
Regarding the NSS situation, Stelios Petsas stated that the pressure on the public health system will reach its peak in the next 7 to 10 days. Instead, a flattening of the case curve is expected.
“As long as we see pressure, we will increase the ICUs as much as we can, and in cooperation with the private sector.” We will do whatever is necessary, treating the country as a single region, “he emphasized.
“No matter how many ICU beds a system has, it will never be enough if the pandemic is not controlled,” he said, noting that the fact that new ICU beds are added shows that the government has a plan and is on alert.
Speaking specifically of Thessaloniki, he noted that the prime minister was the first to put pressure on local actors and that today 50 new ICU beds were added to the co-capital.
“The problem with the pandemic is that it is very easy to go from a small wave to a big wave that can turn into a tsunami,” Petsas said when asked if there was a delay for the co-capital.
“Greece in better condition than other European countries”
Stelios Petsas also commented on the much-disputed statement by Adonidos Georgiadis that we are “fighting” over the severity of the second wave of the pandemic.
According to the government spokesman, governments and infectious disease specialists around the world have clashed, as scientists’ forecasts did not show the exponential growth we have today. In fact, he said that the current exponential increase is more than the worst case for scientists.
Citing data from the ECDC, Petsas said that Greece is in a much better situation than other European countries. Specifically, it is fifth from the end in cases per population and sixth from the end in deaths per population.
What he said about masks in schools.
Regarding the issue that has arisen with the postponement of the school mask contest by the Court of Auditors, Stelios Petsas commented that the pertinent instructions and specifications have been given so that this issue can end.
He clarified that the masks will not be given once and that those that are not appropriate will be replaced.
Regarding the issue of responsibilities for the issue of masks, Mr. Petsas reiterated: “We have clearly said that responsibility is collective and not individual.”
