Republicans retained one of their seats in the United States Senate with the reelection of Tom Tillis in North Carolina.
This development is characterized as a major defeat for Democrats and Joe Biden, who see their hopes of diverting the majority of upper house seats to reduce them.
“I just called Senator Tillis to congratulate him on his victory,” tweeted his Democratic opponent, Cal Cunningham, before the final results were announced.
Senate: 49-48 seats in favor of Republicans
Republicans now have 49 seats, compared to 48 for Democrats in the 100-member body. Three seats remain to be judged: one in Alaska, where the outgoing Republican senator leads, according to still tentative results, and two in traditionally conservative Georgia, where a runoff will be held on Jan. 5.
